Relying on the advantages of the "Hong Kong Macau Medical Device Connect" policy, Nansha Hospital of Guangzhou First People''s Hospital (hereinafter referred to as "Guangzhou Nansha Hospital") successfully introduced the imported drug "Busizumab" for the treatment of retinal diseases by the end of 2023, becoming the first public hospital in Guangzhou to introduce this drug. Recently, multiple patients with retinal diseases have completed injection therapy at the hospital, improving their vision and achieving long-term disease control.
Three years ago, Mr. Tang, who was 52 years old, had a significant decline in his right eye vision, accompanied by black shadows and distorted vision. After hospital inspection, the patient was diagnosed with diabetes retinopathy. Previously, he had undergone multiple first generation anti VEGF (inhibiting vascular endothelial growth factor) drug intravitreal injections for treatment, but his condition did not improve. On the eve of this year''s Spring Festival, Mr. Tang learned that a Nansha hospital in Guangzhou had introduced "Busizumab" and decided to come to the hospital for treatment.
Qiu Haijiang, the director of the ophthalmology department at a Nansha Hospital in Guangzhou, administered "Busizumab" injection therapy to Mr. Tang. One month later, Mr. Tang came to the hospital for a follow-up examination and found that his vision had improved from 4.0 to 4.4, with an increase of 4 lines.
Qiu Haijiang introduced that "Busizumab" is a human vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) inhibitor used to treat elderly patients with macular degeneration mainly caused by polyp lesions, as well as patients who have poor efficacy with conventional anti VEGF drugs or fusion protein drugs.
"Many patients with complicated fundus diseases are not sensitive to the response of the first generation of anti VEGF drugs or need repeated injections." Qiu Haijiang said that as a new generation of innovative drugs for the treatment of wet macular disease and diabetes macular edema, compared with existing drugs, "buxizumab" can absorb intraretinal and subretinal fluid earlier, and has obvious advantages in continuously improving the ocular anatomy.
Qiu Haijiang stated that due to the smaller molecular weight, better penetration, and better anatomical improvement of "Busizumab", the interval between administration can be extended. Patients can receive injections once every 3-4 months, which can reduce their living burden.
It is reported that Nansha Hospital in Guangzhou is the second batch of designated medical institutions in the Guangdong Hong Kong Macao Greater Bay Area''s "Hong Kong Macao Drug and Equipment Connect". As the first health service center for Hong Kong and Macao residents in Nansha, Guangzhou, the hospital has introduced multiple imported drugs.
